Meet Jim
Growing Up
I grew up in Southern California but spent every summer by, and on, the lakes of Minnesota. This contrast grounded my love for both water and the outdoors and nurtured my appreciation for different perspectives. It taught me that the diversity of people and experiences is what makes life truly enjoyable.
Educational Pursuits
I attended St. Olaf College in Minnesota, where I studied ancient history and religion. One transformative experience was spending a semester living in Jerusalem's Old City, studying with faculty from Hebrew University and Birzeit College. This deepened my love for learning and exploration, expanded my worldview, and fueled my passion for history.
Financial Advisory Experience
I began my financial advisory career with Thrivent Financial, where I built a private practice over 20 years, working with individuals, families, small businesses, and nonprofits. In 2020, I joined Mass Mutual Greater Pacific, which later became Sovran Advisors LLC, where I continue my work today. I hold the ChFC designation and bring extensive experience in money management and planning.
Family and Personal Life
I'm married to Dr. Elizabeth Loken, a psychiatrist. We met during our studies in Jerusalem and have been partners in life ever since. We have two daughters and one granddaughter. We enjoy dancing, making music, and hosting friends for meals at our home in Pasadena, California. We also love retreating to our cabin on Stocking Lake in Minnesota to connect with nature.
Community Service
My passion for service extends into my work with nonprofits. I've advised numerous organizations and helped found two. From 2019 until 2025, I served as President of the Board of the Trauma Resource Institute in Claremont, California, which provides a somatic-based approach to trauma recovery and resiliency. TRI has a global reach, working in 104 countries to support areas affected by war, natural disasters, and other crises.
A Life-Long Passion for the Arts to Guiding Others: A Journey from Artist to Pastor to Financial Advisor
My love for the arts has always been a constant; I'm a painter, writer, and musician. After college, I worked at the Minneapolis College of Art and Design and trained as an actor at the Guthrie Theater. Despite this artistic journey, I felt a calling to ministry, earning a Master of Divinity and serving as a pastor for 18 years. In 2000, I transitioned to financial advising, feeling the same sense of calling to help people in a new way.
Jim's World & Life
What gives life meaning and joy?
A major focus of the way I work with clients is about helping their financial lives support what matters to them! Who are the people they care about and what do they want or need to provide them? What dreams do they have about what they want to do now, in retirement, with leaving their assets to others? What gives them joy and satisfaction and enlivens them? Where do they want to make a difference?
I am wired to do things and create things and to live connected to other people that I care about and care about me. My family and friends are core to my being able to be me. Music is medicine to my soul and food for my spirit. Painting has allowed me to let my creative mind bring things to life. I love making a difference in the world in the small ways I can.
I bring these to my work as I use my creativity to help people understand complex ideas and decisions and finding good solutions. This section is where I find my grounding and joy and meaning.
Love Wins – what I have learned from my family
Elizabeth has been the most influential person in my life and a source of strength and hope and love. She is serious and funny and reads books aloud to me.
Julia and Steve and Hilda – my oldest daughter – her husband – and their daughter our first grandchild. Two Stand Up Comedians and their happy relational little one live close enough we get to see them weekly.
Siri Loken and Nicky Baker are my younger daughter and her soon to be husband. Physicians the love the outdoors and friends in Utah and soon will be moving to northern California
The Loken clan have been an amazing source of wisdom and encouragement and fun.
Music is in and around me all the time
My life has always been filled with music. Listening , going to concerts, singing in the choir, writing and producing songs, I even had a Music Management company for a few years working primarily with Jazz artists and rock bands. I have played the guitar for 50 years, I have pianos and conga drums and recording equipment. But I love writing songs. And Elizabeth and I love to dance – rumba, swing, cha cha, salsa. To hear and move to good music… we love it.
My paintings grow out of doodles
I painted water colors for several years before we had kids but 15 years ago I found a program for Ipad that allowed me to create digital images anywhere. They started as 15 minute Plane doodles I created to relax flying across the country every month for client meetings. But over time I have let myself just paint and let things come to mind . I love color and finding how to convey the line and depth and shading of things I see. I have about 49,000 pictures on my phone because I love to capture daily beauty.
Making a difference in the world
My background in a religious tradition emphasizes discerning what you are called to do and be. For me that led me to serve in many different ways. I volunteered on several political campaigns in junior high and high school and ushered at the Old Globe Theater. In college I led a volunteer program where we danced with patients at a state Mental Hospital – in fact this is where Elizabeth and I met. In my role as a pastor I chaired a regional committee working to combat hunger. I helped start an organization for people in the entertainment world juggling their faith and ethics and work life, and later helped start NoHo Home Alliance a wonderful non-profit in North Hollywood doing work with people experiencing homelessness that is still going strong. From 2019 until 2025, I served as the President of the Board for the Trauma Resource Institute in Claremont California.
